From the Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge
As we prepare for Pentecost this Sunday, we remember that day long ago when the disciples gathered together, sheltering in place out of fear of the world beyond. When the Holy Spirit blew into their lives giving them breath and courage, making it possible for the people gathered to understand each other, and to go forth proclaiming good news and baptizing thousands. The Holy Spirit gave birth to the Church on Pentecost through the faithful, and today, the Spirit continues to guide us forward.
For some time now, it feels as if we have been sheltering in place as you prepare to call a new Dean, and as the Diocese prepares to elect the Eighth Bishop of Los Angeles. Taking care of business, of course; but waiting for the future to unfold. Waiting is hard, and exciting especially when the future ahead is bright and beautiful, and full of possibilities. Let me share a glimpse of the bright future that lies ahead for St. John’s Cathedral, and that will unfold over the next five years God willing.
For the past two years, the leadership of St. John’s Cathedral has been working diligently with the development team that will build on the property surrounding our beloved church. The final document to be signed is near completion, and a timeline has been defined. Vertical construction is scheduled to begin July of 2026 on Flower and 27th Street, and will ideally be finished by December 2028. During this time, plans for historic preservation and restoration of the Cathedral will be finalized, and a capital campaign will be necessary to secure funding. Then, as soon as the Flower Project is complete, building on Fig will begin shortly after – as will construction on the Cathedral while the people of St. John’s gather for worship in their new parish hall on Flower. Oh my goodness, so much is on the horizon and the Spirit will be ever-present through it all.
The disciples had no idea what was on the horizon long ago when the Spirit of God gave birth to the Church. God counts on us to show up, to give what we have to offer, to work together to make all things possible, to support each other when life’s difficult and challenging, and to share God’s love given unconditionally. Let us not forget, the Church is the people of God. God is working in and through us at this very moment in time, giving birth once again to something almost beyond imagination, and something that’s bright and beautiful, and full of possibilities.
All of this goodness are gifts of the Spirit that began long ago. Let us wait with full hearts as beloved children of God, and give thanks.
With love and gratitude,
Anne+
