Christopher Gravis and Melissa Gonzalez are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Josephine Gardner Gravis. She was born August 6 at 1:25pm, weighing in a 7 lbs., 12 ounces, and measuring 20 inches in length. Mother and baby are happy and healthy! Christopher and Melissa are grateful for all the love and support they have received from the St. John’s Cathedral community.

As we prepare for Pentecost this Sunday, we remember that day long ago when the disciples gathered together, sheltering in place out of fear of the world beyond. When the Holy Spirit blew into their lives giving them breath and courage, making it possible for the people gathered to understand each other, and to go forth proclaiming good news and baptizing thousands. The Holy Spirit gave birth to the Church on Pentecost through the faithful, and today, the Spirit continues to guide us forward.

As we continue to celebrate the joy of Easter and the power of the Resurrection, we write to thank you with full hearts for your generosity during the first quarter of this year. Your faithful giving not only sustains the ministry of St. John’s—it is bearing witness to the living Christ in our midst.

Alleluia, Christ is Risen, the Lord is Risen Indeed Alleluia.I wish to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who made Holy Week and Easter a beautiful and moving week of prayer, reflection and music, and to everyone who gave of themselves to make all things possible.

Easter is about to dawn. Dawn comes in the morning as light begins to grow as the sun rises and new life springs forth. Dawn always comes after darkness. The light of Easter is the empty tomb discovered by women long ago. Death is no more, pain and suffering are no more, only life everlasting through the love of the Risen Christ.

This Sunday begins Holy Week with the waving of palms and at 10am a short procession around the block singing All Glory Laud and Honor. We gather to remember the final week in the life and love of Jesus in human form on earth, some two millennia ago. During both services, The Passion According to Luke will be read by members of St. John’s Cathedral as Jesus walks the way of the cross suffering in great humility. There will be no sermon; and the service will end in silence and folks are invited to leave quietly. No coffee hour will be offered.

This Sunday, on the fourth Sunday in Lent and Laetare Sunday, we welcome Canon Melissa McCarthy as our special guest preacher at both 8am and 10am, and we will commission the Vestry and Wardens of St. John’s Cathedral during the 10am service. Canon Melissa McCarthy is the Canon to the Ordinary for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, which is a position that she has held since May 2017.

We are happy to announce the formation of your Transition Committee. We are grateful for the individuals listed below who will volunteer their time and energy in the many weeks ahead. They comprise a diverse committee that is representative of our congregation.
