The time has once again come for our annual celebration of Black History Month. It seems like only a week ago that I penned an article about our plans for February last year.
Join us this February as we celebrate Black History Month at the cathedral with gratitude, reverence, and joy.

During Holy Week and Easter we remember and reenact the events that lead up to the death and resurrection of Jesus and celebrate the central tenants of our faith. Holy Week culminates on Easter Sunday, which celebrates Jesus' resurrection from the dead.

The cathedral joyfully welcomes the Revered Guy Leemhuis to the pulpit this Sunday! Fr. Guy serves as President of the Union of Black Episcopalians H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter and as vicar of St. Luke’s of the Mountains Episcopal Church/ San Lucas de las Montañas. His bracing vision of unity in diversity is a leading light in the national and local church and an inspiration to so many.
In case you ever wondered about how governance decisions are made in an Episcopal church, priests and vestry members begin with the bylaws of incorporation – similar to other nonprofit organizations. Such documents are written by parish leaders following national and diocesan canons, which are also written and passed by lay and clerical representatives. We are always in leadership together!
Please join us for the Annual Meeting. A new class of Vestry members will be elected, and an update will be given on the current parish development project. Your presence matters, and all members of the congregation are encouraged to attend as we continue the work of the church together. A member must be in good standing to vote at the annual meeting.

In Luke’s telling of the Christmas story, startled shepherds are the first to hear that good news of great joy given to all people. Since then, through generations and generations, across the world, we keep sharing this Good News, receiving signs from God that, in the coming of Jesus Christ, we have received the greatest gift of all.
On this Thanksgiving weekend, I wish to give thanks for all of you. For your presence, love and generosity of heart and spirit, making all things possible with God. There are the faithful who serve at the Cathedral nearly every week in various capacities, and there are the folks who you never see working behind the scenes. There are others among us who show up when we need you the most. Even more who offer encouraging words of appreciation and gratitude. We know and see you, and we give heartfelt thanks.
I hear that rumors are flying, though they cannot be based on fact – yet. It is true that the proposed building project at St. John’s will not be built as most recently designed; however, we are sitting pretty for a bright future when the timing is ripe. This news is indeed disappointing for all of us who have been working and waiting for construction to begin. Please do not be discouraged; the forces at play are beyond us. All will be well with time.
