A Light to Guide You Home

An epiphany can be an illuminating discovery, like a door being unlocked and opened and the light turned on, as if things make sense all of a sudden. That's what we celebrate this Sunday on the Feast of the Epiphany. Epiphany is when we see what God has been up to all along, opening the door and inviting us all in, to remember we were always part of the family, long lost children finding our way home.

Those wise seeking sages bearing gifts, following a light in the darkness, come to see the child Jesus, and on seeing him begin to see another way home, a new way of life, a different path, the path to our homeland, and along the way to make signposts pointing to the Kingdom where we are headed. That's why we mark this special day at St. John's not only with a festive celebration, but we also bless chalk to mark the doors of our homes to remind ourselves to open the doors of our hearts, to welcome the stranger and the seeker; to remind ourselves that we are marked by our encounter with the Christ child.

Sunday we also will point to Easter, at the end of the 11:00 a.m. mass, we will proclaim the date of Easter and all the feasts calculated around that date, an ancient Christian tradition. We do this to remember that Christmas is only significant in the light of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

This Feast of Epiphany is above all a joyful celebration of being gathered into the family of God. We will continue the party on Wednesday evening at 7:00 as we gather with other family members at the Church of St. James in the City (3903 Wilshire Blvd). Please come for a festive Eucharist with the choir of St. James and a meal following. Fr. Mark will be the preacher. We hope many of our St. John's community will attend, as St. James' folks came to be with us this past Ascension Day.

A blessed New Year and Epiphany to you and may the light of Christ guide your path!
