October Events at St. John's

Dental Health Month: In September and October please consider donating dental health items for the food pantry! We need toothpaste, tooth brushes, and floss. Body soap—bar or liquid forms—would also be earnestly appreciated. These items can be place in the donations basket Sunday morning to be blessed at the collection.

Ushers Wanted: The Cathedral Ushers Guild is seeking new members. Ushers welcome worshippers, take the collection, present the gifts, and guide the congregation to communion. It is an easy way to meet fellow parishioners and contribute to our liturgical life. Training will be provided. If you are interested, please see Walter Killmer on Sunday mornings for more details.

Food Pantry Driver: The St. John's Food Pantry is in need of a volunteer that has access to a truck (small or full size), or van to pick up a produce order (in the nearby DTLA produce district) and to deliver it to St. John's prior to each food pantry distribution. The distributions occur on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month. The order will be pre-staged (normally 25-30 packages) and loaded onto the truck by the produce seller and volunteers for the Food Pantry will help unload the truck upon its arrival at St. John's. If more than one individual wants to volunteer then it would merely be a once a month or every 6-week commitment to this wonderful ministry. Want to get more involved at St. John's? Well here is your chance! The Food Pantry serves 60-90 families twice monthly and being a part of the process that helps provide them with nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables would be a blessing and a gift to each and every one of them. Please see Jeffrey McLellan for further details on Sunday mornings.

October 13+ | Sundays | 9:15 a.m.

Adult Christian Education: Beginning Sunday October 13, a new season of Adult Christian Education begins at our 9:15 education time. Our theme this year is “Thinking Christian(ly).” How do we understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus in a culture where the word Christian has become synonymous with conservatism and exclusivity? How do we present Jesus' way of love as an alternative vision in a dark time? The first series, “(Re)Thinking the Bible,” will explore our assumptions about this sacred text. We do Bible study all the time, but we haven't focused much of our attention on where it comes from, how to interpret it or how we use it in our lives. Let's explore these questions together.

October 13 | Sunday | 12:30 p.m.

Green Assessment: Continue Creation Season after the 11am mass, Sunday, October 13. Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen offer a Creation Guild Conversation inviting us to reflect further on what we have learned through Creation Season and put into practice in our life together at St. John's. How can we be better stewards of creation? Ideas include eliminating disposable plastics and promoting public transit options. What creative ideas do you bring to the table?
