Blessing of the Animals: Sunday, September 8, 10am – Bring your furry friends! Or friends with scales. Four legs, eight legs, or no legs. Celebrate our potential for deep, abiding friendship with the rest of creation at the 10am mass. A section of seats in the church will be kept pet free for those of us with allergies.

Daniel Tamm: Program Marketing Specialist at Dept. of Public Works, LA Sanitation & Environment, presents on local sustainability initiative on Sunday, September 15, after the 10am mass. “Sustainability, resiliency, livability, biodiversity, and climate change are on our minds now, more than ever before. As people of faith, we know that care of creation is care of the common good. We'll explore that, and look at how we can work together to protect the environment in the City of Los Angeles.”

September 22 | Sunday | 9:00 a.m.

Tom Jacobson: President of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, on the role of modern zoos in the survival of endangered species and the connection of the Los Angeles Zoo to our community on Sunday, September 22, also after the 10:00 a.m. mass. The talk will be on the role of modern zoos in the survival of endangered species and the connection of the Los Angeles Zoo to our community.

September 1 | Sunday | 11:00 a.m.

Gun Violence Forum: We will meet again on Sunday, September 1, for our next forum addressing the issues of gun violence and white supremacy. The forum will meet after the 10am mass in the chapel. Some consensus among members of our most recent forum were the following: (1) We need a new sign. (2) The new sign should address larger issues than just gun violence. (3) The message should be a positive one. (4) Examples include, “Blessed are the peace makers,” “Love God, love your neighbor,” “Only God is supreme,” and so on. (5) Our community must commit to works and actions, not simply resting after hanging a new sign, and this will require rethinking our Social Witness Committee. If you have any feedback to add to these points, or others, you can email Fr. Dan and bring your thoughts to the forum on Sept 1.

September 1 | Sunday | 9:00 a.m.

Welcome Downtown Skyline Ministries: Starting September 1st St. John’s has rented out the parish hall to Downtown Skyline Ministries from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Downtown Skyline will park in the Bank of America parking lot and enter through the OneLA entrance on 27th Street, so many of us will not even see them. They will use the parish hall, children’s ministry room, and the kitchen.

September 15 | Sunday | 10:00 a.m.

Belize Day: During the 10am service on Sunday, September 15, we will celebrate the 38th anniversary of Belize's independence from Great Britain. Joining us will be Garifuna drummers and dancers! Gospel music is a powerful and influential art form through which generations of African Americans and others have expressed faith and hope in the face of oppression. Join historian Dr. Daniel E. Walker and the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Los Angeles Chapter on a compelling journey to discover gospel’s spiritual beginnings in Africa. You will not want to miss this inspiring event! Find out more at the Guibord Center online.

Laundry Love: Join St. John’s the last Wednesday of every month (August 28) at Los Lavanderos, 4371 Melrose Ave., for one of the diocese’s most creative and meaningful ministries. We wash and dry laundry for people with financial needs. There are fewer things more important to someone self-image than clean clothes—and it is so often overlooked among service providers. See Deacon Fernando (or e-mail him) if you have any questions.

September 28 | Saturday | 9:00 a.m.

Flower Guild Workshop: Saturday, Sept 28th at St John's, 9am to noon. Would you like to learn to arrange flowers? Interested in becoming part of the Flower Guild? Come to our hands on workshop where you will learn to assemble your own design to take home! Please RSVP to the Church Office by Thursday, Sept 26th so we can have the needed materials. See you there!

September 29 | Sunday | 11:00 a.m.

The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels: For the past several years we have made the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels the date of our Start-Up Sunday. The weather isn't the only reason though. In being part of this community, we have come near to a much greater reality: to countless angels in a festival gathering, to the "assembly of God's firstborn children who are registered in heaven" (Heb. 12:22-23). On Sunday, Sept 29, returning to our 11:00 Mass, we celebrate the community of love by welcoming our choir back from the Summer recess, by a special and glorious festival liturgy, in which we participate in the heavenly feast. We continue our celebration with a special festive lunch (and a breakfast after the 8AM Mass) for the whole congregation in the garden.
