Summer Sunday Celebration: The summer mass schedule begins today, Sunday, July 7, as we return to Eucharist in the round for our Summer Sunday Celebrations! Masses on Sunday will be at 8 & 10 a.m., throughout the months of July, August, and September. Adult Christian Education will meet at 9 a.m. when scheduled.
July 14 - Aug 4 | Sundays | 9:00 a.m.
Adult VBS: Our Summer Sunday Celebrations will once again include an Adult Vacation Bible School (check the details here!). This year we will explore the Letter to the Colossians. One of the shortest books in the New Testament, this letter was written to an early Christian community in the City of Colossae. The letter is only four chapters long, so we will be able to spend our time looking at it in depth over four weeks-- from July 14 through August 4, at the 9:00 a.m. study hour. Check out the audio intro here!
July 14 | Sunday
Book Bags: We are again collecting book bags for local students. This year we are only accepting monetary donations of $20 so we can purchase bag in bulk. We are giving out the book bags on Saturday, July 20th—as such we need your generous donations by Sunday, July 14th.
July 21 | Sunday
Hollywood Bowl: Earl Mounger has secured a selection of free tickets to the Hollywood Bowl that he has generously offered up to all of us at St. John's! You must reserve tickets online and you must pick those tickets at church on Sunday, July 21. The five shows are all weeknights at 8:00 on July 23, Aug 6, Aug 21, Aug 29, and Sept 10.
July 7 | Tuesday
Young Adults Bible Study: Beginning on Tuesday, July 9, at 7:00 p.m., and continuing every Second Tuesday, young adults of the parish are invited to gather together and explore the Bible. The collected writings we call scripture is the beginning point of our beliefs and behaviors, and is the single most important guiding force in our traditions and ethics. Few things are worth more time and hard work, and spark more intense conversation and debate, than the Christian Bible. Victor Eichhorn will facilitate. All are invited and encourage to begin these evenings with Evening Prayer at 6:30. Jul 9 we will discuss the stories of Creation from Genesis 1 & 2. RSVP on Facebook.
July 21 | Sunday
Dodgers Night: Join Episcopalians from around the diocese on Friday, September 6 as our hometown Dodgers face off against the San Francisco Giants! Tickets are $27 and must be paid for in advance. The deadline to pay for your ticket is Sunday, July 21. There is a sign-up list available today and you can make checks out to St. John’s.
July 31 | Sunday
Laundry Love: Join St. John’s the last Wednesday of every month (July 31) at Los Lavanderos, 4371 Melrose Ave., for one of the diocese’s most creative and meaningful ministries. We wash and dry laundry for people with financial needs. There are fewer things more important to someone self-image than clean clothes—and it is so often overlooked among service providers. See Deacon Fernando for if you have any questions.
Altar Flowers: You can directly contribute to the beauty of worship at St. John’s by signing up to provide altar flowers for a simple donation of $75—the Flower Guild will do that hard part! Sign up at church today.
