A liturgy of grief, loneliness, sorrow, and the triumph of love.

April 11, 2019

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the central week of our church year, because through it we encounter the central mystery of our faith -- that Jesus came among us, was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again on the third day. This isn't something that just happened to Jesus. We ourselves participate in these events so that we too can die with him and rise with him in our own lives.

Sunday we go into the streets acknowledging Jesus as king and Lord of all creation. While that is a day with a great deal of fanfare and acclamation, the mood swiftly changes. On Wednesday night we celebrate Tenebrae. It is a time when we go from light to darkness, and have the chance to spend time reflecting on the events in the days ahead, but also to encounter our own experiences of grief, loneliness, sorrow as well as the ultimate triumph of God's love. As the service ends, the light of Christ re-enters the darkness.

Walk through these days from Palm Sunday, through Tenebrae on Wednesday, the great gathering of our community on Maundy Thursday evening when we share a meal and serve one another and meet him in the Holy Eucharist, Good Friday where we bring our own life and mortality to the cross, the descent of Jesus to the dead on Holy Saturday and the ultimate triumph over death at the Great Vigil and Easter morning. In this time we pray you will renew your belief in the one who comes to give us life, who demonstrates that death is not God's last word, the weeping may endure for a time, but joy comes in the morning.
