GFS calls for hygiene supplies
GIRLS FRIENDLY SOCIETY (GFS) is asking the congregation to assist the group in collecting hygiene items for children in foster care. The Biddy Mason Foundation, an organization that provides support for children in the foster care system, has asked GFS and other organizations to assist them in providing services. Biddy Mason was a pioneer African American woman who came to California in the 1850's as a slave. Anti slavery supporters assisted Ms. Mason in petitioning the California Supreme Court for her freedom. Mason won the case. She, her children and all of the slaver holder's human properties were granted freedom. Biddy Mason was an entrepreneur with skills as a midwife and seamstress. She also invested in property, developed and supported charitable and religious organizations and was one of the wealthiest individuals in Los Angeles during the late 19th century. The girls in the St. John's chapter of GFS are learning about this woman and her ability to show compassion towards others people.
The GFS members are asking you to bring the hygiene products to church on Sunday, April 7th and 14th. The Biddy Mason Foundation is requesting the following items: tooth paste, tooth brushes, deodorant, gel body wash, body lotion and shampoo. Thank you for the assistance.
(editor: You can also drop off items at the church office during our regular hours.)
Remember all girls between 7-17 years of age are invited to participate in GFS. The group meets every 4th Sunday, after the 11 am Mass, in the One L.A. conference room in the back of the parish hall.
