Stephen Salts & the Cathedral Choral Academy
October 2019 will mark the inaugural
season of the St. John’s Cathedral Choral Academy - a fully funded music education program for children aged 7-13. We are excited to announce that Stephen W. Salts has been named the Director of the Choral Academy. Stephen comes with over 4 years of experience successfully directing the chorister program at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church in Huntington Beach.
Prior to his appointment at St. Wilfrid’s, Stephen was the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship in the United Kingdom, where he earned a Master of Music degree from the College of Royal Holloway. He also holds degrees in music from California State University Long Beach, as well as Florida State University. Stephen grew up as a boy chorister at the Episcopal parish of Bethesda by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida, and regularly sings now as part of the Choir of St. James’ in-the-city. We will warmly welcome him to St. John’s Cathedral on May 12, when he will be formally introduced to the community at the 11:00am mass, and will available after to answer questions about the Choral Academy.
Stephen Salts is an internationally distinguished Fulbright scholar of choral music. As a conductor, he has enjoyed directing choirs throughout the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. Highlights of his early conducting career include performances at Westminster Abbey in London, four of the major Basilicas in Rome, and venues in New York City and Los Angeles. In addition to his conducting engagements, he is in demand as a bass-baritone. He has been featured as both a soloist and a chorister on major studio recordings released by Hyperion Records, for whom he also co-authored liner notes on a recording of contemporary American choral music. Some of Stephen’s singing highlights include performing for Her Majesty The Queen, holding weeklong residencies at St Paul’s Cathedral in London and Canterbury Cathedral, and singing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Stephen is a Production Manager with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Previously, he was Associate Faculty of Music at Riverside City College where he conducted the Concert Choir and taught a large studio of voice students. He has also conducted the Royal Holloway Founder’s Choir and served as assistant conductor of the internationally acclaimed Choir of Royal Holloway, and the 2016 “Choir of the World” - the Bob Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir.
Stephen earned his Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance from Florida State University, his first Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach where he graduated Summa cum laude, and another Master of Music degree with highest honors from one of the leading music departments in the United Kingdom: Royal Holloway, University of London. He attended Royal Holloway on a Fulbright Postgraduate Award for research focused on the Anglican choral tradition. An avid church musician, he is a staff singer at St James’ in the City Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, served as the Founding Director of the Song School music education program at St Wilfrid’s Episcopal Church in Huntington Beach, and was the Interim Director of Music at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles in 2016. Stephen also served as the Founder & Artistic Director of Howells125, a state-wide music festival celebrating the music of Herbert Howells.
