What's our potential?
On this weekend, 94 years ago, our church building was consecrated by the First Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, Joseph Horsfall Johnson. Our neighborhood looked a lot different then. What possibilities did the congregation gathered in the nave of St. John's imagine for their glorious new building on that day? What possibilities could they never have imagined?
Sunday we celebrate not only the dedication of our building, but the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem when he was an infant. What possibilities would anyone have expected from a baby being brought into the temple in the arms of the poor Mary and her husband Joseph? There were two people who did -- the faithful Simeon and the prophetess Anna. They recognized the potential in the infant Jesus when there was little to see in the present.
In our day, what potential do we see or not see in our congregation, in our building, and in our location? For the St. John's of 2019, or in five years, or 25 years? That is our challenge as we celebrate this dedication weekend. How will we continue to shine the light of Christ for a new era in our own time?
"Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine." (Ephesians 3:20)
