Black History Month

At St. John’s we celebrate Black History from the Feast of Martin Luther King, Jr. (01.20.2019) to the feast of Absalom Jones (02.10.2019). “Quilting is a part of many cultures. The patchwork quilt is especially a part of black culture,” says Canon Earl Mounger. “The altar ‘quilt’ is technically not a quilt. A quilt has a front and back and usually has stuffing in the middle. What we have is a banner. We called it a quilt because it was created to celebrate African American History in 2010. That year the theme was ‘He’s got the Whole World in His Hand.’ Many African American families have used quilts for record keeping to mark significant parts of the family’s life: birth, marriage, and death. I wanted our ‘quilt’ to reflect the diversity of our parish family. There are more than African Americans represented on the ‘quilt.’ Like a ‘family record quilt;’ ours serves as a record of the St. John’s parish family. Parishioners were asked to provide a piece of fabric that held some sentimental significance. There are four parts to each panel: birthplace (upper right) at least two things that represent their involvement in the parish (lower left), the applique of the church is in the center with the year they became a member in the doorway and their name beneath. The ‘quilt’ has many textures and colors like each of us. Separate we are each unique like the panels that represent us. When sown together we are a beautiful, diverse family all in God’s hand.” Please come onto the altar platform after the service and immerse yourself in the history of the parish.

Make a New Year's sweep of you closets and set aside the good stuff! St. John's Creation Guild is hosting a clothing swap in the Parish Hall after the 11:00 service on Sunday February 10th. Bring in clothing and small household goods that you can't use -- quality stuff, the kind of things you'd pass on to a friend--and exchange it for something you like better. If you don't have anything to give, but you'd like to "shop" anyway, that's fine too! We hope everyone will join in the fun. Any items which are left over when the swap is done will be donated to charity. If you are interested in receiving updates from the Creation Guild, and email sign up is list will be on the welcome table.
