December Events at St. John's

Wednesdays | 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday Evening Eucharist: Join us Wednesday nights in Advent to celebrate the mass with special guest speakers from among our congregation.

Sundays | 9:15 a.m.

Christian Education at 9:15: Apocalypse is a Greek word meaning to uncover or reveal. Apocalyptic literature, such as the Book of Revelation, also called The Apocalypse, uses fanciful imagery to convey a deep meaning. Ironically, these images seem to cover up the true meaning rather than uncover it. Our culture is fascinated by apocalyptic imagery. Come see how the real Apocalypse can give us hope instead of despair! Fr. Mark Kowalewski leads this forum every Sunday at 9:15 through December 9. A list of readings will be available online at stjohnsla.org and on the welcome table.

Sunday | December 2 | 8:00 p.m.

Compline at the Cathedral: A 30-minute service of candlelight, stillness, prayer, and song, followed by simple food and fellowship.

Sundays | December 2-16 | 8:00 and 11:00 a.m.

Alternative Christmas Fair: Worship fully. Spend less. Give more. Love all. This year our donation selections are St. John's Food Pantry, Laundry Love, Episcopal Relief & Development/Clean Water. The Fair will be open after the 8am and 11am services. Today, Sunday, December 2, Virginia Classick and her original handmade articles will be available. The Fair will be open December 9th and 16th. On Sunday the 16th we will feature Fr. Mark’s jams, Fr. Dan’s decorative planters, and our St. Lucy’s cookies. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Saturday | December 8 | 9:00 a.m.

Advent Quiet Day: Saturday, December 8: As Episcopalians, we come to Advent to reflect upon the coming of Christ and to remind ourselves that He made a promise to come again. For some, the Advent season is a time of meditation, soul-searching, and hurried joy. For others, the season is a reminder of aspects of our lives which no longer exist along with loved ones lost. This Advent, the Writer’s Group invites you into a sacred space wherein you are welcome no matter what your situation. We recognize that Christ comes in the midst of our excitement—the midst of our sadness—the midst of our pain—and in the midst of our hearts. Come as you are this Advent season.

Tuesday | December 11 | 6:00 p.m.

6th Annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence (over 50K in 2018). Join us to hold a Vigil of Light at St. John's on Tuesday, December 11th at 6:00pm. We'll display our signs and use our cell phone flashlights rather than candles. Following the Vigil, the Evening Prayer service will join in the national commemoraton of the 6th anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
