We enter the central week of our year on Sunday: Holy Week, leading us through the events that changed the course of human history. Each day has its own character and we encourage you to be part of this great week long "retreat." But before we get to Sunday, we have an opportunity to help prepare our liturgical space for the celebrations ahead. Saturday morning at 10:00 members of our community are gathering for a cleaning morning. We invite you to be part of that crew. Our Altar Guild will also be preparing for Holy Week and it's a good opportunity to help with and learn about that ministry. Many hands make the work lighter. Happy Laetare Sunday -- and that would mean what? The Fourth Sunday in Lent traditionally has been a time of refreshment in the middle of the Season. Rose colored vestments replace the more somber purple, flowers will be in church, the mood reflects more of God's lavish grace than our introspection and penitence. The day gets its name from the first word of the traditional Introit or entrance song used in the liturgy, Laetare, rejoice. And so this weekend, where do you see opportunities for joy in your life? Dean's Note for March 4, 2018

Lent brings us renewed emphasis on prayer and fasting as spiritual practices turning us toward God through our interior lives. The third spiritual practice of Lent, alms- giving, is all about turning our eyes outward and meeting God there as well. In particular this week, two events at St. John's will help us in that practice. First, on Sunday after the 11:00 mass our Cathedral Food pantry sponsors an open house to showcase that ministry of service. We have been hearing a lot ion the broader media lately about the housing crisis in Los Angeles and the number of homeless people in our city.
