Compline

“Come to me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
—Matthew 11:28

Compline is among the most ancient services of the Christian tradition. It was originally designed in the 6th century to prepare monks to transition from work to sleep at the end of the day. So, how can a 6th century monastic service speak to our frenzied 21st century lives?

Through candlelight. Through prayer. Through stillness. Through song.

These simple elements resonate across the centuries. They do precisely for us what they did for those 6th century monks. They bring us into community with our fellow travelers – past and present. They pull our attention away from our to do lists and direct it to the presence of the God that created us, redeems us, and sustains us.

In the stillness of Compline we find that we are never alone – not in the darkness of the night, nor in the dark night of the soul. And that is good news – the kind of good news that brings rest and refreshment to our bodies, minds, and souls.

Fall through Spring Compline offers choral prayers in candle light. During the Summer the service is simplified and read in unison from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. In both settings we gather after for food and friendship.

Please join us for Compline services on the 1st Sunday of each month at 8:00 pm (No Compline Services in the Summer). A time of food and fellowship will immediately follow the service.
