About St. John's Downtown:
Our Vision: To embody the divine compassion and hunger for justice that stirred the heart of Jesus and serve him in the City of the Angels. Jesus is leading us to new exciting places as we grow in numbers and as we seek to build God’s kingdom. Come join us on that journey!
A diverse community: People at St. John’s come from all over Los Angeles. We are diverse in gender, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation. We have families that are both tradional and non-traditional as well as people who are single Our church is the house of our father – and your father, God, so you are welcome here!
We’re a community of disciples: Jesus was passionate about building God’s Kingdom. In that Kingdom, all people will one day live in peace, have all their needs met and all relationships will be restored to wholeness. Jesus not only died but rose again. So he continues to energize his followers for his mission to build God’s kingdom in our place and time.
A Cathedral Church: St. John’s is a parish church also serving the larger City of Los Angeles and our Diocese ( a geographical area covering five and a half counties) as a Cathedral church hosting large celebrations where the greater Episcopal community gathers, as well as ecumenical and interfaith celebrations. St. John’s is a crossroads for our city and Diocese – a house of prayer for all people.
Passionate faith: We are a church that’s loose around the edges, but solid at the core. That means that we hold the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the historic Christian faith – yes, we really believe it, and we are glad to share that good news with you. At the same time, Jesus practiced openness to all people in his life. So if you are seeking, not sure what you believe, want to know more, are on a faith quest, come check us out!
Worship: Every Sunday we gather as Christians have done since the beginning. Here at St. John’s our 8:00 service is quiet and smaller, we meet in our chapel. At 10:00 we have worship that come to us from ancient times with different styles of music and at the same time we have some more contemporary elements. We also have a simple service on Wednesday’s at 6:30 in the evening. Our hope is that you will encounter the sacred through our worship experience. At each of these experiences we share God’s word from the Bible and we have communion – We believe that the Risen Jesus comes to us in an amazing way by sharing the broken bread and drinking from the cup he has given us. We hope you will find St. John’s to be a holy place. |
